At the beginning of the 20th century in Russia, among the decorative breeds of dogs, English toy terriers were common. With the advent of Soviet power, the population of this breed declined sharply. In the middle of the 20th century. domestic breeders set out to create a small decorative breed of dogs, reminiscent of an English toy terrier. The first representatives of the Russian toy terrier were received in the mid-1950s. by breeding various small dogs imported from abroad. Selection was aimed at obtaining individuals of the minimum size. Thanks to the introduction of Chihuahua genes, the Russian Toy Terrier received new colors. When breeding dogs with longer hair were also obtained, which they began to use for breeding long-haired toy terriers. The first club of breed lovers was founded in 1996. In 2006, the International Cynological Federation temporarily recognized the Russian smooth-haired toy terrier and the Moscow long-haired toy terrier, but combined these two varieties into one breed of “Russian toy”, under these conditions, Russian “toy” can not claim the CACIB title (candidate for international beauty champions) at international exhibitions.
