Caucasian Shepherd Dog

The Caucasian Shepherd Dog, also popularly known as the “Caucasian Wolfhound”, refers to large dogs whose homeland is the Caucasus. The age of the breed is about 2–2.5 thousand years. Already from the name of the breed it is clear that these dogs were used to protect flocks of sheep from wolves and other predators. The formation of the breed took place under the influence of the shepherd traditions of mountain peoples, on the basis of selection for breeding of the largest, strongest animals with a good instinct, but at the same time trained and obedient to humans. According to popular theory, the ancestor of the Caucasian Shepherd Dog is the Tibetan Great Dane. According to another version, these wolfhounds were actively bred in the ancient state of Urartu (according to other sources – Assyria), where they were used as guard and fighting dogs. Be that as it may, it is known for certain that the shepherd dogs perfectly protected the fortress from enemies, and the sheep from the wolves and were even taken by special order to serve in the army of the Russian Empire. English bulldog

ORIGIN
It is believed that the roots of the English bulldogs are common with the dog-like dogs of the Caucasus, the ancient Roman mastiffs, the Molossian Great Dane from Greece and the Celtic guard dogs. How exactly the genes of all these dogs were mixed – history is silent, but it is known that the progenitors of modern English bulldogs appeared in England in the 16th century. The name of the breed comes from the English “bull” – the bull: the breed was bred specifically for bullying dogs with dogs – a common fun for the population of England. In 1835, bullying was banned, and the breed was on the verge of extinction. The remaining purebred animals became the founders of the English Bulldog breed. In the 18th century, dogs of this breed were used for hunting wild boars and bears, as well as for dog fights. Continue reading
