Corgi Welsh Corgi

Corgis are classified as medium-sized dogs and are of two types: the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Welsh Corgi Cardigan, named after their place of origin – Cardiganshire and Pembrokeshire in Wales.

ORIGIN
The ancestors of the modern Welsh Corgi cardigan came to the British Isles when the Celts developed this territory. The first description of Corgi dogs is indicated in literature dating back to the 10th century.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi were imported from Flanders in about 11–13 centuries.

The introduced dogs were allegedly crossed with British Shepherds and Swedish Walhounds, as well as Icelandic dogs. Due to the proliferation of livestock in Wales, Corgis have been widely used to look after livestock. Pembroke and cardigan have similarities with each other, since in the 19th century they were actively crossed among themselves.

In the early 20th century, these dogs began to be considered a separate breed in the United Kingdom. Corgi gained popularity in Britain after King George VI, the father of the current Queen Elizabeth II, gave her a Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy. Now it is one of Her Majesty’s favorite breeds, which nicknamed them “little shepherds.” In Russia, these dogs appeared not so long ago and, thanks to their cheerful character and small size, are beginning to gain popularity.

The average duration of Corgi dogs is 12-15 years.

APPEARANCE
The height at the withers of a cardigan reaches 30 cm, weight – from 12 to 15 kg.

Pembroke growth can be slightly less than that of a cardigan – 25-30 cm at the withers, body weight of females from 10 to 11 kg, males weigh 12-15 kg.

Corgi have an elongated body and shortened limbs. The head is not large, it resembles the head of a shepherd dog, an elongated muzzle, a wide skull, medium-sized eyes, large, wide-set erect ears. Shortened muscular neck, broad chest, rounded chest, straight back. Short forelimbs are slightly curved, the bone is developed. The tail of the cardigan is long, lowered. Pembroke has a short tail from birth or is stopped in puppyhood.

Corgi has a developed coat, hair of medium length, straight, harsh, undercoat is short and developed in all Corgi.

The color of the wool on the cardigan can be any with white spots. Full white coat is not allowed.

Pembrokes can be of the same color: solid fawn, red, sable or with white spots.

Depending on the type (pembroke or cardigan), exterior, pedigree and the ability to participate in exhibitions, the price of Welsh Corgi also varies. If you decide to buy a puppy of this breed, we recommend contacting professional breeders or specialized nurseries.

CHARACTER AND FEATURES
The only drawback of the Corgi is the desire to bite, not because it is an aggressive dog, but due to the fact that for many centuries these dogs have bitten the cattle that grazed their legs.

Corgi are funny and active dogs, always ready to do work. They are unpretentious and do not know fatigue. These are companion dogs not only for adults, but also for children, get along well with other animals living in the house. Corgis are easily trained dogs, they are adapted for sports such as flyball and agility. It is rare to find a cowardly or aggressive corgi. In any case, you should choose a dog from trusted kennels, and be sure to “get acquainted” with the puppy’s parents. It is also necessary to ask the breeder for all instructions on caring for the dog, and if necessary consult a veterinarian. We should not forget about the mandatory procedures for deworming, vaccination and prevention of ectoparasites.

Corgis are well tolerated in the apartment, if they provide long and active walks. They do not require frequent washing, but regular removal of dead hair and undercoat with specialized brushes is necessary.

FEEDING RECOMMENDATIONS
It is necessary to ensure that Corgis do not gain excess weight. Therefore, it is recommended to use industrial balanced Super Premium class feeds for feeding this group of dogs, for example, Purina® PRO PLAN® Medium Puppy full-feed dry food for medium-sized puppies with OPTISTART® complex, for adults and elderly dogs – full-feed dry dry food for adult medium-sized dogs Purina® PRO PLAN® Medium with OPTIBALANCE® and OPTIAGE complexes respectively.

Susceptibility to diseases
In general, puppies and adult corgi are quite healthy.

Adult corgi have a tendency to develop obesity. Due to the structural features, they can develop diseases of the skeleton and joint-ligamentous apparatus, accompanied by paresis of the pelvic limbs, dysplasia of the elbow and hip joints. Sometimes there is retinal atrophy, heart defects (open ductus arteriosus). Corgis are prone to dermatitis, they have a pathological birth. Do not neglect visits to the veterinarian, and the pet will delight you with its smiling muzzle for a long time.
