Labrador Retriever

The homeland of the Labradors is the island of Newfoundland. Exact information about the time of the origin of the breed or at least about the origin of the name has not been preserved. The initial purpose of the Labrador was a wide variety of assistance to fishermen. These dogs were used both for fishing weakened fish, and for pulling boats to land. At the beginning of the 19th century, the first Labradors came to England, where they liked the local breeders. By crossing labradors with a kinky retriever and, presumably, with several more hunting breeds, the breed labrador retriever was born. We started to breed this breed not so long ago – at the beginning of the 20th century in Switzerland, in the city of Bern. It is believed that the Bernese Mountain Dogs, like all Molossians, owe their origin to Tibetan mastiffs.

The word “mountain dog” in the name of the breed comes from the German “zene” – an alpine pasture, and “hund” – a dog.

Initially, it was a shepherd breed, intended primarily for the protection of sheep. For its strength and endurance, the Bernese Mountain Dog was also used as a draft animal. Continue reading
